By:Klaus Hinkelmann,Oscar Kempthorne
Published on 2005-05-13 by John Wiley & Sons
ISBN 9780471709930

Synopsis
A comprehensive overview of experimental design at the advanced level The development and introduction of new experimental designs in the last fifty years has been quite staggering and was brought about largely by an ever-widening field of applications. Design and Analysis of Experiments, Volume 2: Advanced Experimental Design is the second of a two-volume body of work that builds upon the philosophical foundations of experimental design set forth half a century ago by Oscar Kempthorne, and features the latest developments in the field. Volume 1: An Introduction to Experimental Design introduced students at the MS level to the principles of experimental design, including the groundbreaking work of R. A. Fisher and Frank Yates, and Kempthorne's work in randomization theory with the development of derived linear models. Design and Analysis of Experiments, Volume 2 provides more detail about aspects of error control and treatment design, with emphasis on their historical development and practical significance, and the connections between them. Designed for advanced-level graduate students and industry professionals, this text includes coverage of: Incomplete block and row-column designs Symmetrical and asymmetrical factorial designs Systems of confounding Fractional factorial designs, including main effect plans Supersaturated designs Robust design or Taguchi experiments Lattice designs Crossover designs In order to facilitate the application of text material to a broad range of fields, the authors take a general approach to their discussions. To aid in the construction and analysis of designs, many procedures are illustrated using Statistical Analysis System (SAS®) software.

Adaptive Survey Design

Download Adaptive Survey Design PDF/eBook

By:Barry Schouten,Andy Peytchev,James Wagner
Published on 2017-07-28 by CRC Press
ISBN 9781351650014

Synopsis
Adaptive survey designs (ASDs) provide a framework for data-driven tailoring of data collection procedures to different sample members, often for cost and bias reduction. People vary in how likely they are to respond and in how they respond. This variation leads to opportunities to selectively deploy design features in order to control both nonresponse and measurement errors. ASD aims at the optimal matching of design features and the characteristics of respondents given the survey budget. Such a goal is sensible, but ASD requires investment in more advanced technical systems and management infrastructure and asks for the collection of relevant auxiliary data. So what are current best practices in ASD? And is ASD worthwhile when the same auxiliary data are employed in the estimation afterwards? In this book, the authors provide answers to these questions, and much more.

The Design of Everyday Things

Download The Design of Everyday Things PDF/eBook

By:Don Norman
Published on 2013-11-05 by Basic Books
ISBN 9780465072996

Synopsis
The ultimate guide to human-centered design Even the smartest among us can feel inept as we fail to figure out which light switch or oven burner to turn on, or whether to push, pull, or slide a door. The fault, argues this ingenious-even liberating-book, lies not in ourselves, but in product design that ignores the needs of users and the principles of cognitive psychology. The problems range from ambiguous and hidden controls to arbitrary relationships between controls and functions, coupled with a lack of feedback or other assistance and unreasonable demands on memorization. The Design of Everyday Things shows that good, usable design is possible. The rules are simple: make things visible, exploit natural relationships that couple function and control, and make intelligent use of constraints. The goal: guide the user effortlessly to the right action on the right control at the right time. The Design of Everyday Things is a powerful primer on how--and why--some products satisfy customers while others only frustrate them.

Design for Society

Download Design for Society PDF/eBook

By:Nigel Whiteley
Published on 1997-06-01 by Reaktion Books
ISBN 9780948462658

Synopsis
Although design has become eminently newsworthy among the general public in our society, there is very little understanding to be found of the values and implications that underlie it. Design generates much heat but little light: we live in a world that has much design consciousness, but little design awareness. Nigel Whiteley analyses design's role and status today, and discusses what our obsession with it tells us about our own culture. Design for Society is not an anti-design book; rather, it is an anti-consumerist-design book, in that it reveals what most people would agree are the socially and ecologically unsound values and unsatisfactory implications on which the system of consumerist design is constructed. In so doing, it prepares the ground for a more responsible and just type of design.

Order and meaning in design

Download Order and meaning in design PDF/eBook

By:Wim Muller
Published on 2001 by Purdue University Press
ISBN 9789051896299

Synopsis
Product form creation is a creative professional process. The book focuses on professional product design and the requirements that the design must meet in regard to the product. The book aims at dealing with the visualisation of ideas in a methodical an strategic manner and at the implementation of these ideas. The book provides models for development processes and for realising the interrelationship between typical design expressions such as sketches, drawings and models as well as the phased development of the ultimate product form. The author wrote the Dutch version of his book for an audience of students at the Faculty of Industrial Design (Engineering) at the Delft University of Technology. For these students, the book is required reading in conjunction with lectures by the author. Other readers are Dutch industrial design educators and instructors and possibly practising industrial designers with an academic background. The book is certainly no easy reading: many of its ideas, concepts and models are of an advanced academic nature. The book is further not a handbook in the sense that it will be used in the everyday practice of industrial designers. All kind of academically educated professionals interested in design in general may find this book a usefull extension of their understanding. Such an audience may comprise practitioners as well as students and educators of architecture, engineering design, interior design, industrial design, but also ergonomists, behavioral psychologists, design managers, etc. The major problem in marketing the book will be how to reach the individuals of such a wide and thinly spread audience.

ISBN 9781250194473

Synopsis
* WALL STREET JOURNAL BESTSELLER * An insider's account of Apple's creative process during the golden years of Steve Jobs. Hundreds of millions of people use Apple products every day; several thousand work on Apple's campus in Cupertino, California; but only a handful sit at the drawing board. Creative Selection recounts the life of one of the few who worked behind the scenes, a highly-respected software engineer who worked in the final years of the Steve Jobs era—the Golden Age of Apple. Ken Kocienda offers an inside look at Apple’s creative process. For fifteen years, he was on the ground floor of the company as a specialist, directly responsible for experimenting with novel user interface concepts and writing powerful, easy-to-use software for products including the iPhone, the iPad, and the Safari web browser. His stories explain the symbiotic relationship between software and product development for those who have never dreamed of programming a computer, and reveal what it was like to work on the cutting edge of technology at one of the world's most admired companies. Kocienda shares moments of struggle and success, crisis and collaboration, illuminating each with lessons learned over his Apple career. He introduces the essential elements of innovation—inspiration, collaboration, craft, diligence, decisiveness, taste, and empathy—and uses these as a lens through which to understand productive work culture. An insider's tale of creativity and innovation at Apple, Creative Selection shows readers how a small group of people developed an evolutionary design model, and how they used this methodology to make groundbreaking and intuitive software which countless millions use every day.
